Privacy policy
Last updated: 22 October 2026
The short version: no account, no email address, no tracking, no cookies. The game keeps a random ID in your browser so it recognises you when you come back, and the nickname you pick, which is public.
What's stored in your browser
The game uses your browser's local storage (not cookies) to keep:
- a random player ID, so the game recognises you when you come back;
- your sound setting, and whether you've already pressed the button once;
- if the game runs without a connection to our server, a local copy of your cat.
All of this is needed for the game to work, and none of it is used to track you. Clearing this site's data in your browser erases it: you'll simply come back as a new player.
What our server stores
- A player ID. It is derived from the random ID in your browser by a one-way function: we never store the browser's ID itself.
- The nickname you pick. It is public: it appears on the leaderboard, in the list of past cats, and next to what you do in the room (feeding, scooping, cuddles) for everyone who is online.
- Your game stats: kibbles created (in total and per day), clumps scooped, prints wiped and cuddles given, and the timers for bonuses.
- When you first and last played.
- The history of past cats: their names, how long they lived, and the nickname of the player who fed each one the most.
We don't ask for your email address, your real name or your location. Please use a nickname, not your real name. The game's database does not store IP addresses. Like any website, the company hosting the site may keep standard technical logs, which include IP addresses, for a short time to deliver the pages and keep the service secure.
Third parties
None at the moment. The fonts, code and libraries are served from our own server: loading the game sends no request to any other company. There are no analytics and no social media trackers.
Advertising
The site does not show ads at the moment. We may later add optional rewarded ads: they would only play when you choose to watch one, in exchange for a bonus in the game. Before that happens we will update this page, and visitors from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland will be asked for their consent where the law requires it.
Why we use this data
Only to run the game you choose to play: recognise you, show the leaderboard, keep the history of past cats, and stop abuse such as automated clicking. This is based on our legitimate interest in running the game (Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR). We never sell your data.
How long we keep it
Daily kibble counts are deleted after 8 days. Everything else is kept for as long as the game runs, so the all-time leaderboard and the history of past cats stay complete, unless you ask us to delete it.
Your rights
You can change your nickname at any time from the menu in the top left corner of the game. You can also ask us to access, correct or delete your data, or object to its use, by writing to contact@keepthecatalive.com. Tell us your nickname so we can find your player record. If you think your data is mishandled, you can also complain to your data protection authority (in France, the CNIL).
Children
The game is suitable for all ages and asks for no personal information. If you are a parent and believe your child entered personal information as a nickname, write to us and we will remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes, we will update this page and its date. Important changes, such as the arrival of ads, will be announced on the site.
Contact
Keep the Cat Alive is an independent project. For any question about your data: contact@keepthecatalive.com.
